Is Your AC Ready for Another Florida Summer? Watch for These Warning Signs

HVAC Tips Team 4 min read

Florida summers don’t ease you in. They arrive fast and stay long. By the time you’re sweating through a 95-degree afternoon in Eustis, it’s too late to discover your AC has been quietly struggling. The good news is that most air conditioners give you warning signs well before they fail completely. Knowing what to look for can save you from an emergency breakdown and a much larger repair bill.

Unusual Noises

Your AC should run quietly in the background. If you’re hearing banging, squealing, rattling, or grinding, something is wrong. Banging often points to a loose or broken part inside the compressor. Squealing can indicate a failing belt or motor bearing. Rattling might mean debris is caught in the unit or a component has come loose. None of these sounds are normal. Schedule a service call before a minor issue becomes a major failure.

Warm Air Coming From the Vents

If your system is running but your home isn’t cooling down, check the thermostat first. If it’s set correctly and the airflow still feels warm, you could be dealing with a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, or restricted airflow from a clogged filter or blocked duct. Any of these causes needs professional attention.

Unexplained Spikes in Your Energy Bill

Compare this month’s Duke Energy or SECO bill against the same month last year. A significant jump in energy usage, without a change in your habits, often means your AC is working harder than it should to maintain temperature. Dirty coils, low refrigerant, or a failing component can all cause efficiency to drop.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is when your AC kicks on, runs for just a minute or two, then shuts off, only to start again shortly after. It’s hard on the compressor and usually signals an oversized system, low refrigerant, or a failing thermostat. Over time, short cycling dramatically shortens the lifespan of your equipment.

Excess Humidity Indoors

A properly functioning AC doesn’t just cool your home, it removes humidity. Central Florida air is notoriously humid, and if your indoor air feels sticky even with the AC running, your system may not be removing moisture effectively. This can lead to mold growth and reduced comfort. An aging evaporator coil or an undersized system are common culprits.

What to Do

If you’re noticing one or more of these signs, don’t wait. A spring tune-up can catch problems early, before the peak of summer when HVAC companies are at their busiest. Corman & Sons has been diagnosing and repairing AC systems in Central Florida since 1995, and we know what these systems face in our climate.

Call us to schedule a system inspection. A little preventive attention now can mean uninterrupted comfort all summer long.
